Humphey Bogart

I think it's a good movie, but I can't be only one who thinks Bogart was wrong choice for his character. It's because he was too damn old to be with Sabrina which is just a bit creepy about it.

The part was written for Cary Grant, who was around the same age but still a very attractive man, as well as a master of light comedy. It would have been a better movie with Grant as the male lead, as it is it's good but not great. Bogart did his best to drop his usual air of cynicism and play a comic role, but you can see him trying hard.

One thing I like about this movie is it's one of the few roles where William Holden actually seemed young. Usually when he tried to play the young male lead, he seemed prematurely middle-aged.

LOL, true, but this is one of the staples of the movie industry, not
to mention the porn industry ... that is, keeping hope alive in the
hearts of old men that they can still attract a very young woman
by whatever means.

People criticize Woody Allen for being attracted to younger women,
but I am afraid it's pretty much a thing for all men who are honest
enough to admit it. It is probably true for women too, but women
are even more programmed by society to deny certain feelings.

Though I have liked Bogart since I was a teen and saw him in "The
Treasure of Sierra Madre" I never cared for "Sabrina", nor the remake.
It's just boring and mostly, as you say, fantasy. But this meme goes
on today still. Our oldest actors are men, they go on and on forever
and the women just seem to get younger. This is powerful social
programming for a society that the old men insists must save the
reward of beautiful women for older men ... the men who have the
most money and power. Look at Melania Trump, and all the other
Trump wives.

May I assume you are female, and if so, why do you women put up
with it? To a certain extent female complicity drives these things, and
now at the end of the road certain of these women are making the
unpleasant bargains they had to make or events they had to live
through public.

Anyway, I ramble as usual. I agree, Bogie is too old for Sabrina, but
remember at the time that Bogie's real wife, Lauren Bacall was only
5 years older than Audrey Hepburn. ;-)
