I don't care what anyone says

Humphrey Bogart is great in this role, he seems to get a lot of flack for this role. I don't think he has a bad role.

reply

I agree. I think Bogart did a great job.

reply

Me too, I think he's great as Linus

reply

He wasn't anything exceptional here, but he didn't do a bad job at all.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

reply

Love Bogart. My favorite line in the movie is when he tells Audrey character "it's all in the family
" true classic.

reply

I liked that too. :-)

reply

I don't think he was at his best though. He obviously felt that he was above the material and his costars. who would have figured Bogart for a prima donna?

I understand. Thank you for telling me. -The masked bandit

reply

Bogart was the worst actor in this and completely miscast.

I read somewhere that his marriage was shaky at the time and his wife was jealous of Audrey Hepburn, so he was sure to stay distant from her and didn't like her very much, or something. I think he did the dry Linus bit well, though!

reply

Bogart didn't like William Holden or Audrey Hepburn at all and he thought Hepburn wasn't a good actress. He's one of my favorite actors but I think he is miscast in this.

reply

I don't know about the dynamic between him and his co-stars, but I do agree that he was miscast in this. There were times when he seemed like he was portraying a husband to be plotting the murder of his soon to be wife. Far too intense!

Though I enjoyed the film, I found nothing comedic in it all. I suppose that Bogey deserved to get the girl because the Holden character was so shallow. I think it would have helped if Bogey's character was "thawed out" during the space of the film

reply

I think Gregor Peck, Burt Lancaster, or Kirk Douglas would have been great for Linus. Even Bill Holden would have been great. For the younger brother, Tony Curtis or Montgomery Clift would hAve been awesome

reply

I have always envisioned Melvin Douglas in the role of Linus, if you stuck with an actor of Bogey's generation. But your own idea of casting Holden in the role of Linus is very interesting. However, in that scenario, I think there are better choices for David. Montgomery Clift has no feel for comedy, and while Tony Curtis definitely does, he would not look right in the role as Holden's brother. I don't know whether any of them would have done well as David, but what about Robert Wagner, James Garner or Rock Hudson?

Exactly. The paring up twenty year olds with fifty year olds almost never works and is not very romantic. Bogart is horribly miscast here.

reply

Bogart is also one of my favorites, too. But I think he is terrible in this role. I wish he had not agreed to do this for Wilder. I also wonder how in the world Wilder made this mistake.

Bogart is Bogart.
Audrey is Audrey.
Holden is Holden.
This movie has few flaws. None serious. 😎
