A Popular Classic

RIVER OF NO RETURN is still a popular classic in Germany. It can be seen before midnight on any major channel while most highly praised films of the 1950s are either not shown at all or at 3:00 AM because TV channels fear the loss of their customers. This is naturally kind of a "wet shirt film" and the Hays code didn't permit more. The cougar was sent by the control

It was included in the Cinemathek of the Sueddeutsche Zeitung as one of 50 Great Films and in the book Filmgenres Western as one of 70 important Westerns.

And more than 1150 votes on IMDB mean something, too.

I wouldn't rank it that high, though.

I saw this movie in the mid 1960s on "Saturday Night at the Movies", the first regularly schedule network airing of big-budget films. The series started in 1962 and became popular with the public in short order.

Today we can watch movies like this from high-quality DVDs on HD TVs (like I'm doing right now). The result is an experience almost as good as seeing it for the first time when I was just a wide-eyed kid.

Anybody agree with me?
