Celestial Choir

The first thing you hear on the soundtrack, as Robert Mitchum chops down the tree is a feint, echoey, high-pitched choir, before Mitchum's voice begins the song. This choir sound recurs later in the film and is just about the most haunting, atmospheric noise I've heard on a film soundtrack. It would be wonderful to have a recording of it. Does anyone know if the soundtrack was ever issued? After all there were several songs sung by Marilyn Monroe.

That isn't Mitchum's voice in the opening credits of the movie. I'm pretty sure it's Tennessee Ernie Ford, but it is definitely not Mitchum. He has a pleasant voice, but not the range or the quality for that song.

as a kid the heavenly choir made an impression on me as the spirit of the wilderness and uncharted territory

sorry, I can't answer your question. There may be some beautiful choral music at the beginning of Friendly Persuasion. Also, in case you are not familiar with it, there is beautiful choral music in Borodin, Polovtsian Dances
