Huh-i had always heard that it was filmed on the Snake River in Idaho-in the Frank Church National forest

reply

I read that somewhere, too! It is confusing!

reply

It was probably filmed in various locations.

Yes, I saw what I thought were the Grand Tetons in a few scenes and assumed it was the (fairly accessible) Snake River. As noted by others, it could have been filmed in several areas to work in all the story elements. And, to be reasonably accessible for the logistics of filming a major feature.

The four locations for the various river sequences are:-

Salmon River, Idaho
Maligne River, Alberta
Bow River, Alberta
Snake Indian River, Alberta

Eastwood's Unforgiven was filmed in the Canadian Rockies. Shane was made near Grand Teton.

Thanks for the heads up! Seems to me that Marilyn's stay in the Canadian Rockies won't ever be forgotten. Pics of her in the Rockies are still posted in various places in some of the towns in our mountain parks. Somehow, I have never seen any of Robert Mitchum.

Mitchum was too busy smoking weed to have his picture taken.

reply

Ha ha. 

Well, the general public knows who Marilyn was, but I'm not so sure that too many folks (outside of classic film fans) would necessarily recognize Mitchum in a picture.
