Prince Valiant versus The Black Shield of Falworth
Both "Prince Valiant" and "The Black Shield of Falworth" were released in 1954 and both starred the gorgeous 27 year old Janet Leigh. I always thought both were ludicrous to the nth degree, especially Tony Curtis' New York accent in playing a Celtic Knight, but I was more amused by Robert Wagner's pre-Beatles bowl-cut circular coiffure. Although, to be fair, that silly looking haircut was actually used back in the High Medieval days as can be seen in so many artists' and painters' renditions of human faces in those late Middle Ages, pre- Renaissance days. Which movie did you find more enjoyable even if not accompanied by an acceptable level of the suspension of disbelief? IT's a tough call since they're so close, although I think the Prince Valiant movie was more expensive and a little bit more star-studded than Tony Curtis' offering. All in all, I'm sorry to say, they don't hold a candle to Errol Flynn or even Douglas Fairbanks when it comes to Middle Ages and Renaissance era films, although in my opinion, the Europeans have a virtual monopoly when it comes to historical theater in a European settings, naturally since their strong theatrical acumen as well as their keen interest in culture that tends to outclass American dramatizations when it comes to the cinema which nonetheless was originally an American invention.
