A Red Herring (Spoilers)

The entire movie was a red herring imo. It seemed apparent to me that Mr. Slade was not Jack The Ripper. I was very surprised to learn in the last few minutes of the film that he was.

I still don't really know what happened at the end. Did Jack The Ripper just disappear?

At the end he wades into the Thames River and drowns himself. The police dive in after him, but he has sunk too low for them to retrieve his body.
