Jane Wyman is NOT beautiful

There I said it. With all the actresses in Hollywood to choose from, there picked this goofy looking one for the "beautiful wife" of Wayne Phillips. As much as I like this over the top movie, everytime I see Rock looking longingly at her, I break out laughing. She is a prickly pear! And that hairdo! The too short bangs with the side pin curls - Puhlease. No wonder Rock liked boys. At least if Marilyn Monroe or Ava Gardner were across the table, the girls would've had a fighting chance!!

No, I wouldn't say that Jane Wyman was Grace Kelly type beautiful, but she was a very attractive woman. I think she had the loveliest smile and great skin- As far as the hairdos in this film, well it was the 50's and that is what the women wore. I have photos of my mother with similar clothes and hair styles, as a matter of fact her engagment photo has almost the exact hairdo that Jane wore in this film. As far as Rock Hudson longingly looking at her...have you never seen a beautiful woman or handsome man with a plain looking partner?? I know I have hundreds of times, and sometimes I will cynically think what did she or he see in her or him. But then again, I doubt all the people posting on this board could be called beautiful, so attacking someone elses looks is pretty shallow- Jane may not be called beautiful, but she certainly was a beautiful actress in so many ways!!

I agree with filmloverlady--Wyman was attractive in a non-obvious way. She had a sincerity and sensitivity that transcended the obvious "lookers" of her time--like Monroe and Gardner, for whom beauty was as much of a curse as it was a blessing (and it's certainly a distraction from their acting talent). I think it's no accident Wyman found her greatest popularity when she changed back from sassy, overcooked blonde (her early 1940's WB roles) to a more natural-looking brunette. I imagine women found in this latter incarnation of Wyman someone they could relate to--an ordinary woman aging gracefully and whose quiet, somewhat mundane life (onscreen) matched their own . And this film of course is the ultimate woman's film--an average woman transformed by an experience (in this case, love) greater than the predictable course of her life would ordinarily have allowed for. Something about Wyman's expressiveness (particularly her eyes) and sensitivity embodied exactly what I think Sirk was trying to achieve with this film. And she's even more poignant in the Sirk-Hudson-Wyman follow-up collaboration, ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS. And THAT film has been ranked as one of AFI's top 100 films of all time. So clearly something about this collaboration touches a nerve...and others have responded to Wyman's sincere late 40's/early 50's performances....

Is THAT really necessary? I mean, really. No one makes someone gay.

There was nothing wrong with Jane. Her character WAS a doctor's wife, not Vegas showgirl or stripper.

She was DIFFERENT than the flashy ladies Hudson's character was used to - and she had a brain in her head!

I think Jane is a good actress, but I just find her dull, dull, dull. Not all actresses have to be beautiful, but they need a certain something, which I have never seen in Jane. I do however know many people that would argue that she was very beautiful and compelling. To each his own.

Have you ever watched Falcon Crest? How smart and splendid she was as Angela Channing in that TV series! Sometimes a women's beauty and wisdom also take time to mature and shine. Jane Wyman was at the top of her career and charm until her later ages.

Jane Wyman was the epitome of a well bred kind woman and she was classically beautiful too. Both Marilyn and the other actress look so tacky and brassy today but Jane Wyamn still (In film) looks well put together, of course part of that is the way Sirk makes everyone look well dressed and wealthy. The creepy one in this movie is the pipe smoking guy who "takes Rock's character under his wing" If he wasn't a gay character I dont know who is in this movie. they almost remind me of the character in the book Atlas Shrugged....all so smug in their "spiritual world"

I won't even address the fact that you are completely unable to form your "thoughts" into a cohesive sentence. What I have a big problem with is your equating creepy and gay.

reply

Completly agree

Clearly, some movie viewers need to stick to "modern" movies and leave the classics alone. You must be able to think in historical context to understand and appreciate them, rather than sweating the small stuff like a hairstyle or type of clothing. Just remember why these movies are called "classics." And it would also be good to keep in mind that the ideal of beauty changes with time.

Wow. He just made a simple joke. Take the stick out and untighten your pucker.

Ironically, as a fact against your point of view, a guy used to turn Marilyn Monroe down to marry Jane Wyman in real life - Jane Wyman's third husband Fred Karger. This is mentioned in both Wyman and Monroe's biographies.

reply

I don't blame Karger. Wyman actually was quite attractive (in spite of that unfortunate hairdo), but even more important, she was intelligent and normal, two things Monroe could not claim to be.
