3D in B&W

I thought 3D movies had to be in color for the process to work. I was surprised this movie was black and white. Was this a different 3D process than the other ones made in the 50's that used the blue and red glasses?

All the major movies of this period used Polarized technique. Essentially the same that is being used now.
