That mountain scene was terrifying!!!

It's like dragging a giant weight behind you up a steep mountain. It falls off track, it'll take the car and YOU with it! I was cringing the entire time!

I was too....I've seen this film before but I'd forgotten how scary that mountain scene was.

That scared me two years later when we took a small wee trailer of Tioga Pass. It did not run away with us or fall off the mountain. But when we stopped at the bottom at a tourist trap, the clerk asked "You cooking dinner in there?" A short in the trailer's taillight wiring started a smouldering fire!!!

reply

Tioga Pass is spooky. The only time I've ever saw my former husband look tense behind the wheel of a car.

reply

LOL, when they were going up the mountain I couldn't wait for them to level off and descend. Then that descent . . . it was just as bad!

The entire movie is anxiety inducing. I can't think of another film, certainly not a comedy, that is such a white knuckle job from start to finish.

reply

The entire movie is like a metaphor for the '50s --- but the mountain scene most of all: dizzying, constraining, terrifying, hysterical, poignant, irritating, exhilarating, stupid, and, for the most part, presented in brilliant Techincolor.

It scared the bejeezus out of me when I saw it on TV as a kid.

We are doomed.

Yes! The worst was when the trailer backed over that precipice! I fast forward at that part. If I were Nicky I would have left Tacy up there with her rocks and jam and hiked down and out of that marriage!

reply

the mountain scene is scary and tense. Tacy could have got them killed lying about the rocks. It was dangerous enough trying to navigate with that huge trailer. I do not blame Nicky for being furious with her. It was very quiet in the room when our family watched that scene. Like we were holding our breath for them. I wonder what it was like in the movie theater when it first came out?

Those of us that have towed Camper Trailers can really relate to some of the things shown in this movie. Especially those of us who owned the bumper hitch type trailer in this movie. They are not nearly as maneuverable as some of the newer trailers these days.

Sometimes you don't even need a mountain or a hill to get yourself in trouble. There is a section of I-55 near Cape Girardeau,MO that is flat but I nearly wrecked my Wilderness Camper Trailer when all at once it started fish tailing. A few years later I was towing a trailer with a truck on it through that area when the same thing happened. It was a flat stretch of highway with no curves. I never did figure out what went wrong either time. There were no big trucks close by either time.
