You're spot on. This is a real gem of a film noir which I just discovered for the first time today. Tony Quinn is great in it. I'll be watching this one again.

I saw this film in the theater in 1954 and can't find a copy anywhere.
Where did you see this? Did you find a dvd somewhere?

reply

I saw this film in 1954 when I was 12 years old and I am still haunted by the theme song "Once". The opening sequence showing Johnny McBride (Anthony Quinn)walking along a lonely road is still clear in my mind. I have searched and searched for this movie in any format but have been unable to find it. From some of the comments on the message board, some people seem to have viewed it recently. I'd sure like to know how and where. It's truly been a "long wait"!

I saw this, must have been thirty years ago now, and it's stuck in my head since. Particularly that scene where the bad guys force a bound Venus to crawl across the floor toward Quinn. Should've known it was a Spillane. It had Mickey's particular brand of kink.

Quinn gives a very good performance. Shame the film is so obscure.
