Chiller Theater

Does anyone remember when Chiller Theater on WPIX CH11 in NYC used to show clips from this film, along with scences from Plan Nine From Outer Space, among other films during the intro? And does anyone recall the music?

reply

Yep, I remember Chiller Theater very well -- good old channel 11. Remember also all the movies they had on WOR, channel 9 (Super Adventure Theater, et al)? A few of us engaged in discussions about those great old shows on 9 and 11 over on the boards for THE GIANT BEHEMOTH (on two or three different threads). Someone on one of the BEHEMOTH threads did post a link to I guess YouTube, with several of the old Chiller Theater openings, including the b&w one from the 60s with the shots culled from KILLERS FROM SPACE you refer to. Incredible seeing it again after all these years. I remembered the theme music very well, too, but unfortunately there's no way to transcribe it here! Check out those BEHEMOTH threads for memories and info.

Yeah what was the music from that intro? Also There was show on 7 or channel that ran for short while called "Panic Theater". The music was some kind of Avante Garde Jazz. I wonder who it was.

reply

I think the CT music was some old standard track used in B movies -- I know I've heard it elsewhere over the years but can't place just where. But "Panic Theater" and an avante garde jazz theme don't ring a bell. I do recall 7 had the 4:30 movie and had different themes (i.e., genres of movies; maybe different music too, I don't recall) each weekday, but I only remember what I think was promo music from their ads for it -- whether it was the show's actual music I don't remember. Not jazz, though. I'll have to think about that one.

This show was on fri or saturday nights. It was on very long. If I recall when the boke for a commecial they show picture of a maze of circles.

A maze of circles, sort of like a Slinky? If so, that was probably Super Adventure Theater (channel 9, Saturday nights), although I think they used the same background for some of their other movie programs. I wrote on one of the BEHEMOTH threads that the program they (9) had on each weekday afternoon had this rousing, what I thought was a Russian-sounding, score, but I don't think that's the jazz thing you're referring to. I think 9 also used that maze of circles for Science Fiction Theater, which rivaled Chiller each Saturday night. That one had clips from FORBIDDEN PLANET, THE GIANT BEHEMOTH and others in its intro.

No this was on late at night. Super Adventurew theater showed what looked like a curved stitched boomarang.

Could it have been either channel 7 or 11? At one time they had logos with their channel numbers inside a circle (7 still does). I vaguely recall that 11's late-night movie in the 60s may -- may -- have had a series of 11's in circles all over the screen. But I suspect this may not be what you're thinking of. Channel 2 ran The Late Show (and Late, Late Show) but what I remember from that was the outline of the skyline in the intro, and their title card for the movie, at the end of the commercial break, was simply the title and top two stars between two horizontal lines. From 9 all I recall is the Slinky/boomerang style, apart from Million Dollar Movie's clapper rising over the Manhattan skyline.

Too bad we didn't have VCRs 15 or 20 years earlier! We could have recorded all this great stuff, and the music.
