What's up with the makeup?

OK, I know it's a 1950s western. BUT did they have to put Joan in that awful clownish makeup? She has a permanent expression of surprise. It really distracted from the rest of the film, for me.

That's how I remember her in almost all her films after the 1940's. Overly made up. I mentioned in another post how the excesses of this film are the very things that provide the most entertainment for me. Exaggerated dialog and acting are on display throughout despite the seasoned cast. And Joan's mask-like face paint is just another almost comical excess consistent with the rest of the film. I find the whole thing somehow enjoyable as heck.

Hi, Bob.

Garish makeup was the plastic surgery of the '50s -- at least for Joan Crawford -- and she wore it to the hilt.

WarpedRecord....that was a great analogy...."garish makeup being the plastic surgery of the '50s!"

That wasn't make-up; that was how she looked in real life.

Remember when she and the big ape that played King Kong were going to get married? The ape got a real good look at her face and ran away screaming in fear. He hasn't been seen since.
