KXIW-TV call letters: Not necessarily a 'Goof'

In the 'Goofs' section, one item states that the KXIW call letters on the TV cameras in the New York City studios are incorrect because "Call letters for radio and television stations located east of the Mississippi River all begin with W; Ks are assigned only west of the Mississippi."

That was my first reaction too, but then I remembered there are some exceptions. During the second half of the twentieth century this restriction would be true for any new call letters, but there are several eastern radio stations, including KYW-Philadelphia and KDKA-Pittsburgh, which got their names before the rule was being applied on a consistent basis. (KYW, for instance, originated in Chicago in the 1930s and was later relocated eastward.) There may or may not be any TV stations affected by this anomaly, but, given the history just mentioned, a "K" TV station in New York would not be entirely inconceivable in 1954. That said, the use of "KXIW" in this film could have been the result of someone in the production (presumably from the West Coast) just being careless.
