Does anyone else think

Does anyone else think that Evan Adams III was really creepy?

reply

Yes! Actually, I do think that.
I'm really glad she chose Pete!

Marilyn Monroe: I don't want to be rich. I just want to be wonderful.

reply

Oh, definitely! I was up to his tricks from the moment he followed Gladys to her room after their first date.

Rome. By all means, Rome.

I agree. I think it was supposed to come off as sexy, Evan following behind her all stalkerish, but I thought it was creepy. She should have slammed the front door in his face.

Well when you have 2 men vying for the same woman I think "stalkerish" becomes pretty relative. If you ask me, Jack Lemmon would have been the classic case of a stalker with sociopathic tendencies. Just think about it - he moves in right across the hall from this woman he hardly knows, followed and covertly filmed her after they parted ways in their initial meeting in the park, and irrationally blew his top when he first learns of the billboards. Of course these instances were more-or-less necessary plot devices (and it is a movie afterall) but in real life a guy who does that ends up with a restraining order.

So true---I actually liked that part where Pete sent the film to Gladys, and she watched it---that was really sweet. But,yeah, looking at his actions in current terms, that is stalker behavior, and would creep any modern woman the hell out, definitely. It is interesting, though, how much questionable behavior we're asked to accept under the label of romance---even in books, for that matter.

Considering what happened to Marilyn Monroe, definitely.

reply

Of course. Peter Lawford was creepy.

I have to agree with you. MGM tried to sell him as a boy next door heartthrob in the late 1940's but he really has a untrustworthy quality in his persona that just doesn't gell with that so it's probably a major reason his starring career was lackluster. He was well cast here as a spoiled rich boy of questionable merits.
