Lessons for todays selfish

Lots of lessons here for those who not only actively demonise but also those who buy into the demonification of those less fortunate than themselves by this shower of a heartless hard right wing government.

Very good point.

If you're writing about the UK's 'coalition' government then I agree with you 100%.
I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

Its a morality tale that is ageless.

Its that man again!!

Congratulations for falling for Priestley's tiresome socialist claptrap rather than concentrating on Priestley's excellent characterisation & narration.

I didn't treat this as a political story. It's a tragic story of the way this family treated this young lady.

It's not political, it's upper class and soulless vs. the meager and mistreated. I know some people don't think so but there IS a difference.

The actions of Mr. Birling and Gerald could really only be done by richer people, but the actions of Sheila and Eric could easily be done by poorer people as well. Rude customers in stores, a one-night stand in which the girl gets pregnant...

Eric's could definitely apply to any class of person, but a poor girl threatening not to shop there again, AND threatening to get her mother to close her account, either wouldn't be very likely due to their financial situation, OR, their business wouldn't be much missed, it was because of their money and social standing that the store took Sheila's threat seriously.

reply

Oh, I think that these days, anyone who shops at a store has a say in the matter. If they complain to the manager, the complaint will be taken seriously.

Depends on the establishment. Many years ago we all got ptomaine poisoning from our local KFC because the friers were only cooking at half the heat as they were supposed to, and when my mom called the manager and told him we were never getting anything there again, he couldn't have cared less. Now, you'd think that would be VERY bad publicity for a chain's local business to have word get out about something like that, but it was no skin off his nose whatsoever.

What manager did she call? the store managers are just servers with a fancy name. they have no actual power to change anything. you need district manager at the very least if you want anything to change.

There is no way that I can see that the unfortunates of 1911 could be compared with the 'deprived' of today. Today's British society is ruled by lawyers and the EU. Not the British government.
