Remember the shooting...

Just curious but does anyone on here remember the shooting of the film in Salford. Where you ( as a kid like me ) hanging round the camera crew in short pants / or dress lol, wondering what was going on. I was near the Town Hall when the Sally Army came round.(Did not stop me taking to drink though) Amazing memory, would love to hear from others who had a similar experience . Do share your memories if you can.

Sad to say I wasn't around jfp-mc , only by virtue of not coming into the world until 1966, but I think its brilliant you have that memory of seeing such a film classic being shot. I was brought up in Manchester but outside of Salford (Blackley then Middleton) and I worked in Salford Quays a number of years ago. It must be nice for you to recognise all those locations in the movie.

Hi sharonlee-4

Thanks for getting in touch.
Yes, it nice to know the locations of the film.
As a matter of fact in the scene where Mossop and his wife walk past the back
of Salford town hall the camera pans and they pass really old dwellings. They were torn down but I lived in the flats that were built on the same land a few years later.

Have you had any similar experiences with film location? Years later I remember "Reds" being filmed near Manchester Town Hall and went along ...would you believe they were making their own rain for a night time scene....in Manchester lol

kind regards
James

Hi James

I'm very jealous that you can add another level of enjoyment to watching this wonderful film - I'd like that too, being able to shout "I know that place!" at the TV screen

Do you know, I can lay no claim to having similar film location experiences, but I admit I'm not the most observant person in the world - so I could have walked past cameramen, boom operators and the like in the street and if someone pointed them out to me, I'm the one looking around, nonplussed, saying "where?"

All the best
Sharon

I loved the exterior filming in Hobson's Choice. There's one brief shot that shows giant hyperbolic cooling towers in the distance, an obvious anachronism. Anyone know which power station that was?
I was surprised such towers existed in the U.K. in the 1950s when this was filmed -- they didn't appear in the U.S. until about the 1970s.
Anyway, great film with great performances and great directing.

hello im watching this on film4 in the uk right now. the wedding scene when will marries maggie a power station and its cooling tower can be seen behind them in the distance. this was in Stockport just south of Manchester. i know this because i grew up there , it was disused by the late seventies as my brothers and me explored it . im guessing the shot was done by a second unit in heaton norris park which has a view over the area, then the actors performed their scene in front of this projected image .
