Ada and Mrs. Figgins...

Does Ada really say "Look at him, slinking away with his fancy bitch". I've rewound it a dozen times and that's what it sounds like to me. Also, what exactly do Ada and Mrs. Figgins say after that, as Maggie and Will are walking away?

I do believe the line reads, "Look at him, slinking away with his fancy bit."

Having downloaded the play (from which the film was made), I checked for the content of that line....unfortunately it's an "original" in the film and doesn't appear in the play at all, for the very good reason that there is no Mrs. Figgins in the play's cast to speak such a line!!

The confrontation between Ada and Maggie (in the play) takes place in the shop, and their dialogue is exactly as it is in the film - "Not much for two women to fall out over", "Take a good look at him", etc. But there is no Mrs. Figgins....sorry !!

As an afterthought, and to add another alternative....I thought that Mrs. Figgins' line in the film referred to him walking away with "his fancy piece".

I can confirm the "slinking away with his fancy bit" - that's what appears on the subtitle caption of my DVD.

What a brilliant film it is - and how Brenda de Banzie's marvellous performance puts even Charles Laughton in the shade!! (for me, anyway)
