It needed to up the sleaze factor. Evelyn Keyes played it too high classed. Jesse White seemed to mumble through out, that weird guy desperately trying to channel Peter Lorre. Phillip Ahn and Marie Windsor are the best of this tropical noir. A bookish Keye Luke seems like he should be on his way to a lecture. Elsa Lancaster totally miscast a mainlander for the Midwest.

Whilst I thought more of the film than you did..I quite enjoyed it... I had exactly the same thought about the cut-rate immitation Peter Loree character .. ie the whole film would have been better with the real thing! And hey, why not fantasise.. Humph as Chet
