There's plenty of bizarre occurrences in this movie, but one of the strangest IMO is Duncan Craig being signed on as a first mate on a ship bound for Antarctic waters, despite the fact that he clearly has no commercial sailing experience.

The Scottish captain (don't call me skipper!) seems pretty chilled about it...but second - in - charge in some of the world's most dangerous waters? References clearly weren't called for.

I only watched it because of Stanley Baker but at least he`s got some charisma unlike dull Alan Ladd and his very bland love interest.The plot is laboured although the feisty female skipper is good fun(isn`t that Jacoba Brink from "For Your Eyes Only"?)The film is really just a curiosity now when it was ok to slaughter helpless whales.

The slaughter of the whales had an adverse effect on Starfleet as well.
