River height !!

There is a scene where the miners have constructed a sluice to run river water down the mountain side to expose potential emerald deposits after a major cave in. This water runs into the river and causes blockage problems. How can this water be collected from the river and run down to the river ??? Do they have large pumps hidden somewhere or is it just a case of Hollywood science overcoming gravity ?
