Frances Langford goof?

I saw 'The Glenn Miller Story' for the first time recently.
Didn't Frances Langford call James Stewart 'James' instead of Glenn when she was introduced at the military concert?

reply

No, she didn't. If you listen closely she says 'Glenn.'

reply

You are correct. I bought the DVD recently and it is muffled but she does say "Glenn"

reply

Yes I have the movie and went to that part she does call him james you are right

reply

No, actually. If you listen closely she says 'Glenn.'

reply

I have the movie listen to it 5 times she says James

reply

I just saw the movie last night, for the upteeth time. I will have to go back and listen to this spot you're talking about. However, who called Jimmy Stewart, James? I have never heard of him referred to so formally.

reply

well she did not say glenn the woman was francis langford and when she was handed the microphone she did not say thank you glenn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

Boy, tough to call. Starts out like a "G" but ends like an "S". I've heard Jimmy Stewart called James many times. Maybe this is one reason some called him James: After he entered the Army as a private (BEFORE Pearl Harbor), he became a pilot, earned the Air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Croix de Guerre and 7 battle stars. He did not go on 'milk runs' in his B-24 bomber. He flew 20 missions including a Berlin run. All daylight raids. In 1959, he served in the Air Force Reserve, before retiring as a brigadier general. In 1966 he flew on (not piloted) a B-52 on a bombing raid to North Vietnam. General James M. Stewart sounds better then General Jimmy.
He remains today one of my five favorite actors. He steals every scene he is in.

reply

Thanks for the info on James Stewart. I agree, he really does steal every scene.

reply

One story I heard about Jimmy Stewart was about a Spanish hotel. He was told that actors were not welcome and replied that he was a US AF Brigidier General. He was welcome to stay at the hotel. My most poignant memory of Jimmy Stewart is him reading a poem about his dog on the Tonight Show.

reply

Try to get hold of the BluRay disc. It'll prove you wrong beyond any doubt.

reply

Just watched it (UK DVD)and it's definitely not James but neither does it actually sound like Glenn.
To me it sounds more like she is saying Glyn but the sound of her voice at this point seems to be slightly different so it may well be that she actually said something else and it was re-dubbed afterwards (difficult to tell due to the angle of her head)

reply

Its definetly Thankyou Glenn.

reply

Yup, watched it last night, no-way it was 'James'. I don't know how anyone could have thought it was as the last sound is 'n' not 's'.

reply

I just watched this scene about one minute ago as it was played on the Turner Classic Movie network. Sure sounded like "James" to me!

Could there be different versions out there with different dubbings?

reply

[deleted]

I just saw the scene & I definitely heard her say "Thank you James".

reply

Same here. I'm afraid she did seem to say "James."

"Howdy, Bub"

reply

Hi titusmoody:
Thanks for your reply that you heard the same thing I did.

reply

And heard it at the exact same moment, skater!!

"Howdy, Bub"

seriously there is not even a question about it... she CLEARLY says thank you GLENN. clean your ears or turn those hearing aids up folks.

reply

I've recently downloaded the movie, and have re-checked it since reading this thread, and she definitely says "Glenn." Such a goof wouldn't be allowed before releasing the movie.

reply

I wonder if some versions are dubbed?

reply

There all thankyou Glenn lol

reply

I just listened to it (3x) and I'm sure she said "Glenn".

Yes, sir, I'm going to do nothing like she's never been done before!

reply

When the trumpet player cuts his lip and is leaving , it sure sounded like he said, "I'm sorry Jim".

I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.

reply

What really surprised me about this is that I never knew Francis Langford was a singer. The only thing I ever knew she did was play Blanch opposite Don Amache in "The Bickersons" on radio. I bought some cassettes of old time radio shows years and years ago.

A heart can be broken, but it still keeps a-beatin' just the same.

Frances was the American forces sweetheart during WW2, and had many hit songs. Her most famous song which is from the movie Every Night at Eight is the beautiful..........I'm In the Mood For Love.

Going back to what Frances says in the movie, I now believe she says "James" after listening to the song a few times on a CD...............Frances probably accidentally said "James" as she was a good friend of James Stewart in real life, and Frances did actually call him..........James.

Jeanne, Gloria, Toby, Mitzi, Eleanor, Frances, Deborah - are adorable - I love them all.

reply

But first and foremost she was a band singer - and a very good one, too.

reply

Just been on TV. Clear as day even over a tv speaker she says "Thank you Glenn. (kiss) thats's from Helen." There is no way you can mix it up with saying James. Either the other writers have hearing problems or there is a different version of the film with a soundtrack goof which seems rather incredible.

reply

Further to your question, I have just played back this scene on a very high quality audio and video BluRay disc.

She says, "Thank you, Glenn" as clear as crystal.
