Scenes with priest, blacksmith not in final cut.......

Early in the film, before they start on the journey from Puerto Miguel, there's a scene at the blacksmith's where the priest warns them about the Garden of Evil, the moon of the white man, etc.

In the extras on the DVD, there are some stills of this scene, and there's a brief shot in the trailer of them waving goodbye to the priest.

I'm only guessing that Zanuck had enough exposition by that point in the film, and goes right from the cantina scene to them riding off into a very panoramic shot.

Remember, the sole reason behind this film was to show off the brand new CinemaScope process, but i would liked to have had that scene with the priest as well.

This may have been the first widescreen western ever made, and the scenery does makes up for some of the script's shortcomings.

Thanks for your comments Lonixcap, I agree. When I finally saw this film on TV I was disappointed, something seemed to be missing. Too much scenery and music, and not enough story. Rita Moreno is totally wasted in a bit part. Henry Hathaway's usual sure hand seemed to be missing here too. The characters and story needed more depth, not just cardboard characters going through the motions. Even Herrmann's score was excessive, perhaps trying too hard to compensate for the lack of any real drama, and missing his usual minimalist touch. Should be retitled "Lost on Location" !
