The Legion of Decency

I see posters condemning the Legion of Decency which merely reflected the attitudes and morals of that time. I grew up in that era. I'm 72 now and enjoy movies like "Goodfellas", "Jurassic Park", and "Star Wars", etc., TV shows like "The Big Bang", "Sopranos", and "Game of Thrones" etc., and others with nudity and the "F" bomb used all through the movie. Back then we went to the movies to see "Marty", "Rio Bravo", etc., and on TV, "Father Knows Best", "Leave It to Beaver" etc., and we enjoyed those movies and TV shows just as much at the time.
It is obviously different today and I changed with the times without even realizing it. But looking at how it was back then with today's eyes is the wrong way to judge the thinking of that era. What we consider acceptable today was unheard of from the 20's to the mid-60's. Look at the mess "Gone With the Wind" stirred up because Rhett Butler used the word "damn" in 1939. Today, that word wouldn't even be noticed in a "G" rated movie. So let's try to understand that what may have been considered unacceptable then was only the traditional customs of the times and not a form of oppression or just plain wrong. In the end, a good movie is a good movie no matter when it was made as sure as a bomb is a bomb.
