I would have stayed with Dick!

What a pitty she stayed with her abusing husband... But well, maybe she helped him to change for the better :)

I hated that guy! Although admittedly, a large part of why I disliked him from the start, is because he reminded me so much of the jerk-character that Laurence Harvey plays in BUtterfield 8 - I really thought it was the same guy and my strong dislike carried over from that film!

John was an idiot anyway - staying up getting drunk & acting a fool when he had a beautiful loving wife waiting upstairs for him, and he was cold to her every chance he could, even when she was just trying to help.

But I also think that's a pretty close depiction of marriage - men are doting & loving at first, and then once you get hitched it's like you're married to a stranger!!

^zuzupetal, I think you're getting your Dicks and Johns mixed up!

Kidding aside... Ruth was married to John, not Dick. Dick (Dana Andrews) was the "nice" guy, John (Peter Finch) was the "bad" guy - or at least he was the cold, indifferent husband.

Yes, you're right - thanks. I corrected my post :)

Yep, once they've got intimacy on demand they no longer have to worry about wooing, wining, dining etc.

Just ignore the wife and carry on with your own pursuits until you next get the itch.
