Did anyone else think the old detective bore a striking resemblance to Columbo? Always smoking, wearing a wrinkled overcoat, seemingly clueless but right on the money with everything! I wonder if that's where the writers of Columbo found their inspiration.

The similarities have not gone unnoticed. It's been suggested he was an inspiration.
