Looks older than the fifties....

Had this film not featured a flying saucer, I bet many people seeing this without knowing it was from fifties would think it was the thirties. The film has the "stagey" look like films from the early thirties. The alien woman's costume and the robot both look something from thirties or forties serial or the cover of a 1930's sci fi pulp magazine.

It's stagey look no doubt comes from the fact that it was actually adapted from a stage play. Added to this it's in B & W and the Brits budgets on both A & B films were comparatively leaner than their Hollywood counterparts. I'm sure it was influenced in look by the SF pulp magazines.🐭

I've recently seen Devil Girl From Mars for the first time, having read about it in books, magazines and on websites for many, many years. It was everything that I hoped it would be, and I was thoroughly entertained. Considering it was a low budget British movie the quality of the special effects is most impressive, and in my opinion just as good as those in bigger budgeted American films from the same period, such as The Day The Earth Stood Still and Earth vs the Flying Saucers. And I was surprised at how sexy Patricia Laffan was as Nyah.

"What's that Miss Nyah? Go back with you to Mars and become your sex slave? Oh, yes please. Is this the queue?"
