Are we to assume Lucia was raped?

Demetrius becomes distraught at the treatment of his loved one, but all that seems to happen is they carry her around for a bit, then accidentally break her neck. Is this 1950's shorthand for her being gang-banged by the Gladiators, do you think?

reply

Duh.

This was the 1950's way of depicting rape on film. It would have violated censorship codes if they had graphically depicted Lucia's rape by the Gladiators. This was just a way for them to show how barbaric these people were. I didn't like that scene and felt it was not necessary as it doesn't push the plot forward.

*although I thought the one Gladiator who accidentally breaks her neck and kisses her was very very hot. Who was the actor ?

She clearly passes out before she can be raped, and Dardanius, played by Richard Egan, is so taken back an surprised that he gives up on his lust. Her neck is not broken, but Demetrius thinks she is dead. She is in a coma-like state. The scene is however very important to the plot, as it is the point where in response Demetrius sheds his Christian beliefs and goes out and starts killing the others in the arena. Finding her much later in the trance holding The Robe is what brings him back in the opposite direction. In a way it is the most pivitol event in the whole film in terms of the plot.

It's so good to see someone was actually paying attention. I couldn't believe anyone watching the movie could think that particular scene was so insignificant.

I'm not sure how you can say that this scene is unnecessary and doesn't push the plot forward as this incident caused Demetrius to abandon his faith.

I was expecting her to be raped but then this was a 1950s film so they couldn't get away with that then. I thought it was meant to be implied she was raped and at first assumed she was playing dead to perhaps avoid the rape. Guess not.

Any film that has the bible and ancient cities would often get away with more then a story from the present day

Perhaps you're looking at it all wrong. The night before the gladiators go into the arena to battle for their lives they're given a chance to 'let their hair down' and enjoy themselves. Women are brought in to 'entertain' them.

Lucia obviously has no business being there because she's not that type of woman but she's so desperate to see Demetrius she begs Paula to take her. Once there she figures she'll be safe with Demetrius. Unfortunately, she's fresh meat and a very pretty girl so she attracts the attention of several of the other gladiators.

Messalina has Demetrius taken off the roster for the upcoming arena fights knowing he'll lose his right to attend the festivities, Lucia will be left unprotected, and one of the other guys will claim her for himself. Naturally, Demetrius is left there to witness the whole thing.

Lucia knows exactly what will happen to her especially when Dardanius gets a hold of her and parades her around as his prize. She is so afraid and traumatized she passes out from shock. Paula, perhaps to protect her or because she really believes it to be true, screams out, 'she's dead.' Having heard this, Demetrius believes she is dead. I assume Paul's the one who gets Lucia out of there and returns her to her home.

Lucia was neither raped nor gang raped; and her neck was not broken. She was a bit shaken as she tried to fight back and break free from Dardanius but, other than that, she was not physically injured in any way. Her problem was purely psychological. Besides what happened to her, she was worried about what had or would happen to Demetrius.

The scene started as a sexual assault and was going to progress to rape. She was being pawed over and kissed against her will. She was being carried up the stairs to where a man was going to take her somewhere to have sex with her privately.

He was rough with her, he snapped her neck back and indeed injured her, prompting Demetrius to lose his Christian faith, as someone said.

However, the robe of Jesus, who was known as a healer, clearly healed the woman and maybe even brought her back to life after she was motionless and said to be dead. Perhaps her neck was even broken.

This is a Christian story about a Christ known to heal people and perform miracles. Clearly, the suggestion that this holy robe healed or revived Lucia is what restored Demetrius' faith.

Both the Lucia assault scene and the Lucia revival scene represent a major turn in Demetrius' life and faith.

If you watch closely, you'll notice there was no penile penetration.
