Number from the Student Prince

Robert Osborne mentioned that Stanley Donen only liked three numbers from this movie: Cyd Charisse's dance number, Ann Miller's dance number and Gene and Fred Kelly's dance number. These numbers were spectacular and much of the lyrical stuff pales in comparison.

HOwever, I did really like the number from The Student Prince. The melody is classically beautiful and the singer was really talented. You could really see, when watching this scene, how Romberg's music could captivate. Many young girls of the time must have been thrilled at the sight of a handsome prince and a troop of officers serenading the heroine as she stands on a balcony. I know it would be classified as corny today but it got through to cynical old me.

I thought that the music Romberg did best was the "schmaltz". When he tried to be modern I don't think he was his true self.

"Serenade" happens to be my favorite song of all time and it is done beautifully here. I like this version much better than Mario Lanza's version in the movie "The Student Prince". They also used the original lyrics. These were rewritten for the movie and are much different.
