Earliest film to use the word 'groovy'


Jose Ferrer says it to Helen Traubel, who says it is "bebop" slang. And that scene is set in the 1920's.

 I finally got to see this movie the other night on TCM - from start to finish - and when I heard that word, I actually said out loud "Groovy???" I remember it from the early 70's. It was funny hearing it in a movie made in the 50's that was set much earlier. (Mr. Romberg passed away in 1951.) I wonder if it was an "adlib" by Mr. Ferrer and they just left it in.

Jazz musicians were using the word in the 1920s, I think.
