shareCumbernatch worked with Jackson as the voice of Smaug in "The Hobbit", so I got a feeling he might be on the short list for Gibson.

The idea of Benedict Cumberbatch being on the "short list" to play the renowned Wing Commander is quite ironic, considering Cumberbatch is listed in his IMDb file as being 6'. Paul Brickhill described Guy Gibson as "a small, nuggetty [sp?] man", a description that much better fits an actor BC has worked with at least twice: James McAvoy (5'7"). Also, while both actors are considerably older than Gibson was at the time of the mission, McAvoy is three years younger than Cumberbatch. (And, yes, I realize that Richard Todd was 36 when the original DB was released!)
However, if the remake does go forward (which I personally think unlikely) a better choice for GG might be someone much younger--and shorter, LOL--than either JMcA or BC: Daniel Radcliffe.
