William Holden

was one great big hunk of spunk. Anyone agree?

reply

Absolutely without a doubt. He's known as "Hubba-Hubba" Holden in my house.

Have you seen Born Yesterday? One of the movies at which he is at his height of hunky-ness, imho.

reply

Woo Hoo!

No, I don't believe I have. I might have to start up a Bill Holden DVD collection. He certainly was breath taking, wasn't he?

reply

Breath-taking to say the least. And on so many levels! I heartily recommend Born Yesterday and two relatively unknown little movies -- The Moon is Blue and Apartment for Peggy. And, of course, Picnic. Many happy hours can be spent building a Holden collection.

reply

I love Picnic. Okay, I'll see if these other films are available, hopefully in a boxed set.

reply

I couldn't get Apartment for Peggy. It isn't available on DVD as far as I can see.

Born Yesterday is available via Amazon from several suppliers but I'm getting the idea that they don't ship to Oz!

So I've ordered The Moon is Blue and Picnic.

reply

I hope you enjoy them! I'd hate for you to get them on my recommendation and then you don't like them. Please do let me know how you liked them.

reply

I already like Picnic. So you're halfway there. I'm a bit disappointed that I couldn't get the other two. Plus why isn't there a boxed set of his films? Surely Bill's memory and his fans deserve better.

Boxed sets are usually put out by a studio (or whoever owns the old studio's name and library). I think our Bill moved around quite a bit studio-wise. My guess is that no one entity owns the movies most likely to be released in sets. Just a guess, though.

That makes a lot of sense, Pam.

For a less assertive, but charming younger Bill Holden, try "Rachel and the Stranger" (1948), just two years before he made "Sunset Boulevard". His costars were Loretta Young, Robert Mitchum and Gary Gray.

One of my all-time favorites.

reply

Thanks for the tip, AriesJB4. I'll see it's available on DVD. I love Loretta Young and Robert Mitchum as well.

Rats! It's only available of VHS! I hope they get it onto DVD one day soon.

Ijust watched The Country Girl again on DVD, all the central performances are marvellous! They could remake it with the same script, just try to replace the actors, and get new songs. Brilliant!

reply

I really didn't like the ending. The remake should address that.

reply

You might fancy the one playing the Bing Crosby role in the remake!

reply

It wasn't Bing Crosby as much as it was "Frank". So, I don't think so.

reply

Guess it was a good job he wasn't married to you!

Although I have seen "The Country Girl" numerous times, I never fail to be moved by the lines that William Holden speaks regarding alcoholism, such as either a drinker dies or he quits on his own. More ironic is the dialogue offered by Grace Kelly when she is about to walk out on Bing Crosby as per Mr. Holden's pleadings, not realizing that she is the stalwart figure behind Crosby. She said to Holden as the Bernie Dodd character, that her husband Frank (Bing Crosby) will be in the strong, sober hands of Bernie Dodd.

I just find watching Bill Holden's movies to be a downer sometimes, because he had everything going for him, but happiness. Several moments of his off screen persona will remain with me always, namely his interview with David Frost, when Frost had a NY based program, and his acknowledgment of Barbara Stanwyck at the Academy Awards in the late 1970s, what she did for his career early on during the making of "Golden Boy". Harry Cohn, head of Columbia Pictures at the time was going to replace Holden, but Stanwyck coached him through the part and salvaged his budding career. He went on to say that because of her interest, understanding and above all her generosity, that he is here tonight on stage (the megastar that he became) and they embraced. True class and I am happy that he managed to say what was in his heart for the world to hear. Well done.

A great movie star...what movies he made, what performances he gave...and what a list of great leading ladies: Stanwyck, Kim Novak, Susan Hayward,
Jennifer Jones, Grace Kelly, Gloria Swanson, Faye Dunaway, Capucine,
Lucille Ball, Audrey Hepburn.

Definitely check out "Stalag 17"

I absolutely agree

"Hunk of spunk" lol....absolutely!

He was so sincere, supportive and utterly adorable in this movie!

His look in Born Yesterday, Sabrina and Stalag 17 are my favorites, with the younger BH in Sunset Blvd and though he looked older than he was due to his lifestyle, he still had that certain something in Picnic.

I get sad watching Paris When it Sizzles (aside from the fact that it could have been much better, but he looks so dissapated in most of it, with a fresher, less squinty look in a few scenes that showed he still had it.

A good actor, but I don't see why you ladies are so crazy over him. LOL

Treat me nice! It's my birthday!

reply

I think many girls fell hard for him when they saw him shirtless in Sunset Blvd.

reply

Holden was great in "Bridge Over River Kwai" "The Wild Bunch" and "Network," the latter two he should have won best actor for.
