Why did Frank hate himself but want to be liked by others?

It just seemed weird to me. Nobody in that situation wants to be liked by others, unless they pretend. Frank didn't pretend, he actually cared about, and was clearly affected by his son's death, but then, why did he use the said accident for his own sakes? Kinda ruined the whole movie for me somehow from that point when Grace Kelly explained it all and mentioned his "hobby of wanting to be liked", followed by Cosby's speeches afterwards about how he'd been using his son's death to make up for his performances. I got no sympathy for him as the movie ended.

Maybe it was a broadway-ish, 50s film kind of thing...? Else, I'll just see it as a plot hole.

All in all, I watched this because of Grace Kelly and I was satisfied with her brilliant performance, she was almost unrecognizable... but Cosby's and Holden's were very good also.

He had a Personality Disorder - that's why Georgie tells Bernie that Frank just used the kid's death as an excuse to then behave in ways that he wanted to anyway.
