Dorothy Dandridge

I have just been given the DVD of Carmen Jones which I have loved for years. I loved it as much as ever but when I read the very brief biographies of Belafonte and Dandridge there was no mention of his work for civil rights - a bit like Robeson - and it said that she had died very young - 42 or something, from drugs. I had never heard that before and felt how sad after such a superlative A1 performance. I have never seen her in anything else.

The A&E Biography of Dorothy Dandridge is on the Island in the Sun dvd.
I have never seen the Halle Berry bio-pic of Dorothy but that is out on dvd as well. You could check at the library to see if they have any biographies on her.

I saw her in a 1952 movie from MGM called "Bright Road". Dorothy plays a first year school teacher and Harry Belafonte plays the principal. Check it out, if you get the chance. There is a great book about her entitled "Dorothy Dandridge" by Donald Bogle. She led a very interesting, but tragic life.

I hate the word tragic when referred to Ms. D.
Being an avid fan of hers myself, I wouldn't
say that she lived a tragic life but I
think the events surrounding her were
tragic and she dealt with them the best
way that she could...

1.Racism
2.Sexism
3.Agism
4.Civil Rights Movement
5.Black Power Movement
6.Being accepted
7.Being respected
8.Romance
9.Money (bad investments)
10.Depression (She tried to rise above-it-all but it got the best of her)

She did a hell of a lot during her short-life.
Donald Bogle gives us a depiction but he
doesn't even cover everything that went
on in Dottie's life. This woman was
AMAZING and people all around her were in
AWE of her.

Her BIO written by her and Earl Conrad...

"Everything and Nothing" is a hoot!

Dorothy Dandridge is Fabulous!
Tinsel Town is coming SOON!

I am not black, but never the less, I think Dorothy Dandridge was far and away the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. I never even came close to meeting her, but from a distance I loved her.
