A classic Black film list without Porgy & Bess? Even if it hasn't been seen in forever a leaving it off makes the list a joke!

reply

COTTON COMES TO HARLEM
ANNA LUCASTA
STORMY WEATHER
A RAISIN IN THE SUN
SCHOOL DAZE
ST. LOUIS BLUES (awful biopic of W.C Handy, but where else do you have Nat King Cole, Eartha Kitt, Cab Calloway, Pearl Bailey, Mahalia Jackson, Juano Hernandez & young Billy Preston in the same flick?)
CABIN IN THE SKY
MENACE II SOCIETY
SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT

reply

I would love to see porgy and bess. I have heard the soundtrack and it sounds fab.

reply

I've seen Porgy and Bess. Don't really have a great VHS tape of it. I still need to sit my butt down and watch the entire movie without doing something else.

For historical reasons I would include:

'Hallelujah' (1929)

'Green Pastures'(1936)

'Blacula' (1972)

I'm surprised these films weren't on anyone's list:

'The Learning Tree'(1969)

'The Spook Who Sat by the Door' (1973)

'Uptown Saturday Night' (1974)

'Cornbread,Earl & Me' (1975)

'She's Gotta Have It' (1986)*Edit (I see someone did list this one)
