What Happens to Van Johnson at End

What happens to the Van Johnson character at the end. He is standing at the bridge when Gene Kelly goes running over the bridge. Is this based upon a book that tells what happened. Does Van Johnson enter Brigadoon too are does he go back to NY.

I also wondered just what Jeff Douglas would do at the end of Brigadoon.Unlike his friend Tommy Albright who found the love of his life & a way of life he desired in the village,Jeff had no such connections. He was a full fledged cynic who believed in only what he could see, touch, taste, hear,& smell as he himself stated.Brigadoon's magical existence was proven to him at the conclusion of the story but was that enough to make him want to spend his life there?Still & all,he had to be a loyal friend to Tommy to make the return trip to Scotland.

I guess there's a book but I've never read it. The movie doesn't tell us what happened to him. But, I have never wondered about him. My answer is that of course he went back to NY. After all he wasn't in love with anyone in Brigadoon. One of the main plot lines was that if you love someone deeply enough, miracles can happen. In Tommy's case, a miracle happened. In Jeff's case, of course not.

reply

Yeah, I highly doubt that he would join Tommy in Brigadoon.

Better question, why is he never punished for Harry's death? I mean, I know they take the stance that Harry was the villain and was horribly ungrateful for not appreciating the "miracle". But still, he killed a man in a contrived "accident". If his actions made him depressed and made him turn to drinking it would be one thing. But he drank constantly throughout the film. He says it feels as though nothing that happened in Brigadoon was real but even if Harry should have been dead by then (since he was born 200 years ago), Jeff still killed someone who had years left to live.

Jeff was nice enough to accompany Tommy all the way back to Scotland, yet Tommy doesn't even look back and ask Jeff to come and stay too?

Some friend.

If Jeff did cross that bridge, he probably would have been hanged for Harry's murder.

I don't see it that way at all. He was out shooting grouse, one flew up towards the tree and he shot at it. He had no idea that Harry was up there, it's not true at all that it was "contrived". It's more a plot device to get rid of The Bad Guy so that True Love Can Bloom between Tommy and Fiona, a typical movie thing.

As for Jeff, remember that he wasn't happy in New York either, he was sick of the rat race. My take: he went back to Brigadoon with Tommy and lived out his life there.

Jeff is the last person to be seen with Tommy before his mysterious disappearance, so of course he is arrested, tried and convicted of his murder (and there's justice for those of you who want to see him pay for the murder of Harry)!

I don't know if it's "really wacky," but your French is coming along.

reply

What evidence would there be for murder? What motive? People don't get tried for murder simply because they were the last one to see a missing person. He would simply tell the truth. Tommy went off by himself and that was the last time he saw him. There's nothing to prove otherwise.

reply

It's obvious he went back to New York. Period.

Here's what happened. Jeff watches Tommy disappear into the mist with Fiona. Jeff plans on returning to NYC but on the train out of Edinburgh to London there is a stop in York where he meets a beautiful red head, Beryl. Of course they fall in love & live happily ever after in York raising three children aptly named Tommy, Fiona & Harry. Beryl happens to have a cousin named Lily whose husband is James & they have a son named, Harry. Yes, Harry Potter. Enjoy! HootsMon! Que bagpipes! 😘
