Who was Barney Green?

As a primary school child in the early 1950s I was taken to the local Cinema to see Walt Disney's "The Living Desert" as a school excursion.

Before the documentary started a promo was shown for "Brigadoon." What stuck in my mind was men dancing around singing something that sounded to my 7 year old ears like "Go home with Barney Green." I was left wondering who Barney Green was and why these big guys wanted to go home with him.
