I like the movie and Ginger Rogers...but mainly because I liked seeing her next outfit. I think she was kind of stiff and overacting by turns throughout, but she was fun to look at.

OK, so this is, I guess, a "spoiler request" - I was just watching this movie and the phone rang at the exact moment George Raft was accusing Ginger Rogers. I missed whatever the reply was when she said he had no evidence. Anyone who just saw this movie and can tell me how he proved it?????

reply

Remember when Raft pinched the sheet from the telephone note pad that had Ginger's doodles on it? He claimed that the police handwriting expert had used the doodles to identify the picture of the hanged woman on the girl's "suicide note" as being drawn by Ginger.

It would be even better if He madeth the sun to rise on the good and madeth his steel boot heel to come down on the evil.

And by the way, "Black Widow" is a very entertaining movie, worth at least one viewing.

reply

Not necessarily a must see, but it's definitely worth at least one viewing.

For a mystery movie, it doesn't do a bad job of keeping one guessing till the very end. (Although, I'm sure it is predictable to some.) And it's quite entertaining indeed. There's no outstanding performances here or anything, but the whole cast does a good job overall. Even Ginger Rogers. Yes, her performance is nothing noteworthy, but I think she fit the role perfectly.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

From the moment Van Heflin and Gene Tierney returned from the airport to their seemingly empty darkened apartment with music blaring I found the film extremely predictable. Actually, from the first moment "Brian" was flattered by the young girl outside the theatre when she said that she assumed he was his own man despite having married a famous powerful actress I could see where THAT was heading. And I'm no noir/mystery aficionado.

I didn't find this film any more predictable than any of the number of film noirs I watched during TCM's Summer of Darkness festival. In fact, I actually found it way more engrossing.

I can't tell you how bored I was the most of the film noirs that played this summer – even some of the better-known ones. I think REBECCA is a real snooze-fest. And compared to this one that most people seem to not be appreciating, I found THE MALTESE FALCON to be true fizzle!

Oh well… I guess this is a noir for people who don't like noir.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

This was an ensemble cast, no star role, yet Ginger Rogers steals the film. She may be stiff, but she's playing a Broadway actress. I can only imagine what Tallulah Bankhead could have done with this part. She would have obliterated everyone!

I am formerly known as HillieBoliday....Member since May 2006.

On that note....I wonder what Tallulah Bankhead said during the 25 minute conversation she had with the Director as to why she was turning down the role?
