Ginger Rogers is Terrible.

She overacts. Baaaad impersonation of the first choice for the role: Tallulah Bank head.

If you are going to say mean and nasty things about someone, at least make sure you spell their name correctly...

Anyway...

Did it ever occur to you... That the character was originally written with Tallulah Bankhead in mind, Tallulah later turned it down, and then when Ginger ROGERS agreed to take on the role, the description of the character's personality and traits stayed the same as before, and so... Ginger ROGERS played the character as written which meant she HAD to overact, and do a bad impersonation of Tallulah?

People need to learn the difference between a bad character & a bad actress!

Ginger Rogers was a great actress, and was also known for being a nice, caring, charming, and had a great sense of humor, in real life.

Try watching her film Storm Warning (1951), and watch the scene where she gets furious at her sister's husband. Based on how she was in real life, I have no idea what 'rage' she was tapping into for her performance. But I even felt that anger coming from her as I watched the scene. It gives me the chills every time. I think she should have won an oscar for that scene.

I think you need to watch more of Ginger's films, and then you will see for yourself that she could take on any kind of role and do it extremely well.

While I didn't like every character she played, it was always obvious that it was the writers' faults for creating the bad characters she played, and had nothing to do with Ginger's acting!

I own Storm Warning and I think she was great in the role. I have also seen Tight Spot and I think she was far better than the film deserved. I don't think she was suited for this one. There are many actresses who could have played it better. Not every actor an do everything.

I did not attack HER, I said she wasn't suited for this part.

I'm very sorry that my opinion offended and angered you so much that you felt you had to resort to pettiness and personal attacks. I had no idea that you knew her PERSONALLY. Thanks for writing and I hope you have a WONDERFUL DAY.

mcdemuth's reaction to your incredibly stupid post was justified. Rogers was playing a hambone Broadway diva, and her performance was very apt. Bette Davis did much the same thing with Margo Channing, and I'll bet you think that it's a great performance. Fact is, Davis' work was extremely one-dimensional, and a tiresome send-up of Tallu, while Rogers' Carlotta Marin is an entertainingly satiric look at a particular kind of theater star. I don't see any Bankhead in Rogers' work, at all.
And you think you merely said that Rogers was unsuitable? Is that how you interpret "terrible," "baaaad," and "overacts"?

reply

I disagree. Rogers is great as the girl next door or the tough gal, but doesn't play "the bitch" well. I'd have rather seen you in the role.

You've completely danced around my points without addressing them. Well, as the old saying goes, "Opinions are like ass holes; everyone has one." And in your case.......oh, never mind. You're not worth any more of my time.

We all adore uou.

Many thanks. Question: how does one pronounce uou?

reply

Oh how you care! About cars! About clothes! About money!

Deleted your post, eh? Quoting Dead Ringer doesn't score you any points.

I'm eating lunch at work and you're the only one laughably arrogant. Slow news day. You don't seem busy. It's probably only me and Meals on Wheels here for you.

In any event, I have been kind and supportive. You, by way of contrast have been ... Well I don't use that kind of language.

A critic said the same about Rogers being bad in this, perhaps the climax
