Hansel?

Whats with the repetition of "Hansel"?

reply

I have been wondering this for years!

reply

Man, I'm glad you replied, I thought I was the only one who saw it! But we're still no closer to the answer.

This has got to be some inside joke at Termite Terrace ~ It appears to be the emphasis of the short "a" in "Haaaaaansel". I've watched these cartoons since I can remember - no less than 35 years and this is the ONLY unanswered trivia I don't get along with "What was Barney Rubble's job?" No he didn't work at Slate's with Fred.

reply

Ok buddy, love the fact you replied and trust me I'm going to research this so I can understand it better, but could you break it down form me, just a little? Termite Terrace? Who is Fred?

reply

Just got through watching this episode and I'm too wondering what's with the joke. I bought vol. 5 so I'm hoping there is some commentary that might explain this joke further. Other than 'Hansel' sounds funny, I can't think of any reason they would be repetitive with it.

Termite Terrace is the nickname of the studio at Warner Bros. where the artists created all these wonderful 'toons.

The previous poster was referring to Fred Flinstone, and his buddy, Barney Rubble.

reply

Thank you for clearing that up :) Now all we need is for someone to solve the riddle ...

hecks-sake...I'm a '55 model. You must be very young if you have to ask "Who is Fred?" I'll bet the Hansel thing is an inside joke considering how crazy fun it must have been at Termite Terrace. Concerning this cartoon, I love the fact that Bea Benaderet of Petticoat Junction (Kate the mother and owner of The Shady Rest) and Beverly Hillbillies (Pearl Bodine, Jethro's mother) fame was the voice of all the characters in it besides Bugs. You have to hear her in Little Red Riding Rabbit (1944) as the obnoxious Red Riding Hood. She was also a riot as Granny(Tweety & Sylvester) and Ma Bear. She had a great career in voice overs. She was Lucy's original choice for Ethel but couldn't accept due to another TV contract.

reply

Yes lbross your assumption is correct; nevertheless I am sure there are plently of '55 models that would pose the same question as I did.

Thanks for your helpful insights, and yeah I'd long realised that it probably was a inside joke. One, which we on the outside, will never figure out. Still it's a kicker scene. Cheers!

reply

It must have had something to do with the german pronunciation of Hansel as opposed to the american version which is a bit flatter. I remember as a kid my cousins and I would go around saying HAAnsel? after seeing this.

Awww! your mother rides a Vaccuum Cleaner!

reply

Yeah, I'd grown up hearing the 'a' in Hansel pronounced like in 'anvil'. That's always been the joke for me...

reply

agghh i JUST saw this on cartoon network and this bugged me a ton. i'm glad i'm not the only one wishing for a clear answer. is there no one we could contact?

reply

Yeah, Walt Disney when we reach The Gate. It looks like it's a pending answer till then.

reply

Why would Disney have the answer to a question about a WB cartoon?

"I'm in such bad shape, I'm wearing prescription underwear." Phyllis Diller 1917-2012

reply

That's the point. It's all ridiculous.

reply

Obviously, Barney worked for the McMahon & Tate Agency on the Winston cigarettes account.
Darren and Samantha Stevens even dropped by on that one episode.

I just want to say I have thought about this question myself for the past 25 years. Other forums i searched in had posts which said the joke was simply that Hansel was a funny sounding name. But i always thought that there must be an insider joke that we the outsiders would never get. And after much searching here's a more acceptable explanation for me thus far:

this is from boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-317055.html

Researching the subject uncovers an Ottawa woman named Judith Hansel who complained about the cartoon's closing line:

Bugs: [to audience, while walking off with the voluptuous female rabbit Witch Hazel has been transformed into] Yeah, yeah, I know. But aren't they all witches inside?

My guess, this was just a cover for the fact that she was pissed off that the toon ("Bewitched Bunny") had implied she had a stupid name.

reply

Cheers for tracking that down.
