I knew who the villain was as soon as...


I saw that yellow scarf. They used to paint the front end of some German fighter planes that flew sorties into Russia, so that they wouldn't be mistaken for Russian planes on the way back. That's why he never got hit.

Interesting. However, The Scarf didn't start betraying his own guys to the Germans until after the Dutch had shamed his mother. He was wearing the scarf long before that, when there was not yet any need for the Germans to be able to identify him so as not to shoot him mistakenly.
