Victor Mature, the bad guy? Say it ain't so! Better it should have been Clark Gable. He started out playing villains. Victor Mature was one of my heroes when I was a child. As far as I know, this was the only time he played a villain.

Of course, you're right and I know that. They made Burt Lancaster the villain over Gary Cooper, also the older, more established good-guy super-star hero in "Vera Cruz" for the same reason. I just didn't like Victor Mature as a mama's boy bad guy. It was his only role I didn't enjoy him in.

I think he played a guy who turned into a villain in 'The Long Haul'
Also he played a villain who was sent to Sing Sing in 'Kiss of Death', although he later turned and became an informer.
That would had been a decent twist.
