As I recall, she pretended that she had been married to a 'George Leslie' as played by Robert Ryan.

In those days, going by a different name was pretty easy. You didn't have to constantly prove your identity.

Good question. My guess is she started using that name after George died and she bought the house. She used her own name when she opened the dress shop.
