Such a great film!

Just saw this for the first time. What a delight. For 1954, this film is incredibly impressive. The set design, the submarine and how it navigates, the scenes filmed underwater.

The acting was top notch.

I loved Esmerelda. Very cute!

Great great film!

It's a bona fide classic. One of the best Disney films of all time.

The squid!!!

What a wondrous marriage of Jules Verne and Disney magic. I remember it after many decades.

I just realized that, in our US post-war world, we have made a nuclear submarine named Nautilus and a spacecraft named Enterprise. Romantic poet Percy Shelly wrote that “the poet is the unacknowledged legislator of the world.” Works of fiction have resulted in wild hardware in our time, which shows that works of imagination can become material reality when the source material so inspires our technicians.

It's a fantastic film. Really shows how prescient Jules Verne was in the mid-nineteenth century (even if the plot was adapted to remove some of the original's more objectionable content). The last words of Captain Nemo (played by James Mason) still give me the chills: "There is hope for the future. When the world is ready for a new and better life, all this will someday come to pass... in God's good time."
