Something dosn't quite add up

Shortly after they repelled the cannibals, they tried to get off the reef before a warship attacked them. As the "Nautilus" struggles to get away, you can cleary see the sea floor. Not long after the warship hits them, the sub takes in water, nd the engine stops. As they repair it, they sink deeper and deeper. Corect me if I'm wrong, but they just barely escaped the sea floor of the island and suudenly the there's nothing but water around them. Did the underwater part of the island suddenly disappear?

OR

was the reef they were trapped on the very edge of the island seabed and water on the other side like a cliff? The "Nautilus" is pointing to the left of the screen when it gets off the reef and when it sinks. Granted it may have been turning around aafter getting off the reef, so is it plausible they turned and put enough distance between them and the island before they started sinking?

Furthermore, the squid appears after they get moving again. Could the giant squid have been swimming near the island?

OR

While they sank, the currents carried the sub into the squid's territory?

Yeah I think that was the idea, and they moved a little bit and the currents took them.

Giant Squid generally live deep in the water.

Actually there was a strange situation a few years ago when a giant squid appeared in a harbor. Someone actually went into the water and swam with the squid for a while. Later a boat sort of herded the squid out to deeper water.

Most of the giant squid known to science were either found in sperm whale stomachs or washed up dead or dying on the shore.
