Great Find

I hadn't seen this gem since the early sixties when it was running in syndication.
Great find on DVD. This jewel can be found at Wal-Mart for only $5.50. Can't beat it.

Yep, as a history and war buff, I highly, I repeat HIGHLY recommend you buy this if you have any interest in the area.

my walmart has each disc for 1 dollar each so 4 dollars for the complete collection - can't believe that the history channel is selling this same set for over 70 dollars with very little difference in terms of quality

I had to purchase the first 2 discs from amazon because they were out of them at walmart but after all is said and done I still saved over 60 bucks and donlt regret paying extra for shipping and such

I picked up volume 2 last summer and agonized ever since about finding the rest of the series. Wal-mart finally had volumes 3+4 this weekend! Got them all for $3 total. I don't suppose I'll ever get volume 1, but I'm not giving up yet! I could try that $5.50 box set, but that's silly.

For a 50-odd year-old documentary, Victory at Sea is quite fantastic. Great music, too, of course.

I read on amazon.com that the sound quality is poor. How did you find the sound?

reply

The 5.50 set at Walmart is about as good as it's going to get. Remember, this was a very early TV show. TV sound back then was dreadful. I am pretty sure this originated on 16mm film, and had a mono soundtrack. Later, RCA did studio recordings of a suite of music from the series in stereo. There were at least three LPs released. I've seen 16mm prints of this, and the sound was about the same. The DVD transfer looks like it's made from brand new prints. The only way the sound could be improved is if tapes of the original recording sessions exist.

I was considering a purchase of the DVD set a few years ago but saw some reviews stating teh audio was badly done so I went with the VHS sent. No idea of the VHS availability now.

Yep, I just picked it up for my father in law, then got a copy of it for myself.

My dad loved this series and would watch it over and over again. He also loved putting the soundtrack LP on and listening to it as he made his model airplanes.

It made me cry watching it, as I lost him 3 years ago. I know if he were still alive he'd love to have this.
