The Case of the Texas Cowgirl

Just finished watching the 1955 TV version of "The Case of the Texas Cowgirl".
It stars Ronald Howard and H. Marion crawford.

Just a quick question -

How does Sgt. Wilkins understad Chief Running Water.

Thank you.

I don't think we're supposed to know that...I just think we're supposed to assume that Wilkins has a lot more on the ball that Lestrade gives him credit for. What *I* wanted to know was how Minnie managed to get that covered wagon all over town.

They don't teach anything at University. I had to recognize ducksh*t for brains by myself.

I watched that episode today, and I just assumed that Wilkins is a bit of a fan of Indian culture in the 50s boys' adventures sense. You know, Roy Rogers novels, brave cowboys, noble Indians, stuff like that. Probably reads books about the West in his free time [when he's not helping Holmes ;)].

I really like this series: it's light and fun. I have the DVD's and I watch them often just for fun. This is the only episode I've never seen more than once.

I think that Sgt. Wilkins knowing what Chief Running Water is saying is supposed to be a humorous attempt to show that he knows more than people think he does, that he is not the fool he seems. No reason is given for his knowledge, so it is up to the viewer to fill in the picture. I just assumed he was a fan of the American "Wild West'or had an interest in Indians that gave him knowledge of the language. What I found more improbable was Watson lassoing the criminal at the end, even though he never used one in his life. The amount of time he whiirled the lasso, the crimiinal would have been long gone, not 6 feet away. The covered wagon, the teepee, the way the cowgirl talked (very anoying and she sounded more like she came from Alabama than Texas), her being ready tto just shoot Holmes and Watson, all very cliche. Probably the worst episode of the 39. But I just take this one for what it is and move on to the next episode.

Still waters run very, very deep.

We have to assume that he is a fan of at least the American Indian part of the "Wild West," but it's hard to imagine that would include speaking one of the languages.
