Why Nobody was strong enough to say NO! to La Crawford !

I saw the scenes were Joan Crawford took over the role of her daughter in that show! In the movie, "Mommie's Dearest"! So nobody was stong enough to said No! Joan Crawford ruined the credibility of the character and her daughter Christina was ashamed! One of the most ridiculous idea on soap! La Crawford believe she could played a 25 years old character at almost 60 years old! Ridiculous!

this is what was written about that in a book i have called "Soap Opera History" in the late 60's Joan Crawfords adopted daughter Christina was appearing on the secret storm an ailment forced Christina to be hospitalized, joan volunteered to step in and perform her role. christina was surprised by her mothers offer and found it a little far fetched. after all the character she played was 24years old. At the time joan was 64.
But the serials producers graciously accepted Joans offer. CBS supported the move because they thought it would attract millions of new viewersto the secret storm. To accomidate Joans schedule the producers taped all her scenes in a single weekend and then aired them over a 4 day period. Joan was paid $585.00 which she donated to her hairdresser.
Watching Joans episodes from her hospital bed Christina was dishearted to see her mother visibly drunk. the embarrassing sad incident is described in detaill in her best selling autobiography "mommie dearest"
just thought I'd telll you what iv'e read. Peace

However, I was around back then and saw those episodes. While it did look ludicrous for Joan to be playing the part, she was not noticably drunk. The film Mommie Dearest grossly exaggerated this.

I watched the shows when they aired. She looked too old, but at the time I didn't hear any criticism that she did a bad job. She was very much Joan Crawford and not her daughter, but this was a soap opera and people were just happy to see her on it.

Joan Crawford (much as I dislike her offscreen personality) was still a star to housewives who viewed soap operas in the 1960's. Her guest stint brought in a lot of publicity for the show....even if she just did it to get publicity for herself.

"...ruined the credibility of the characte"

I don't think soap opera's ever really cared about "credibility" too much.
