James Brown - Lt. Rip Masters

I am in the process of writing a biography of James Brown. I am looking for people who knew him or have inside information on the making of The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin. I am also including a chapter devoted to comments from viewers about the show and what it meant to them during their childhood, fondest memories, favorite episode, etc.
I am interested especially in hearing from the Maj. James Brown, ret. who wrote his biography for this website. PLEASE CONTACT ME!!!!...Linda Ruhl

Hi -

I'm not able to offer any help but am writing to ask whether you know where/how I can access the audio track from the "White Buffalo" episode, which has him singing the song of the same name. (The MGM record, which I have obtained, is a different version.)

TIA

Hi Tia,
To the best of my knowledge, the MGM recording is the only one available on the market. The film was made and voice-overs done on video only. You might try taping off your TV, but will also get the sounds of the show along with it. Did you know that there are over a dozen songs recorded by James Brown for MGM records? I was able to collect all of them from ebay auctions over the years. My biography of James Brown is nearly finished and hopefully should be published before too much longer. If you would care to add a comment for the book on your fondest memories of the show, I would be happy to add it to the chapter on Rin Tin Tin fans. Thanksa for contacting me...Linda Ruhl

Hi Linda Well although I was only in one of the Rin tin tin's in fact the last one called the Failure . I can only recall that we had a good time shooting it if I remember right Ben Johnson was in it also . The script I have of it still I am looking for a tape of it and so far haven't found one . I Played Jill I think that was the name I would have to get the script of it to find ot for sure. I remember we really couldn't disturb the dogs we got to pet them but off set we had to leave them alone. I as a child actor had a good experiance's and loved doing it . I know for some kids it was hard as the parents forced them into it . I say that because some who didn't get a part would be yelled at by the person who would bring them to the audition. My parents and I would either leave with a job or go home and say oh well maybe next time. I had a good agent Hazel Mc Millen I think that is how she spelt it she also had Jay North , Angelia Cartwright and others in 1958 . I was lucky to get on a series called Rescue 8 I played Susan Johnson the daughter of Skip and Patty. I did allot of commercials and played in some other tv shows but for me it was fun and a good experiance . I had good support from my family. Anyway hope you find your answers and if you can help me find a tape of the Failure I would appericiate it . Thanks Mary K. Long ( maiden Cleary)

Hi Mary, I am so happy to hear from you! It's nice that you had a positive experience as a child actor...as you said, many do not! I haven't seen the episode you refer to, but will keep an eye out for it. I'm looking for The Last Navajo, in case you ever find that one. Work on the biography is coming along nicely, and Jim's daughter has been a TREMENDOUS help with it. If you ever recall any interesting little things that might have happened while shooting the show, I would love to hear about them. You can contact me directly at [email protected]. Thanks so much for writing!...Linda PS...Interesting that you mention Jay North. I am planning to try contacting him because his father did much of the mixing on the MGM records that Jim made.

Hi Well Linda you asked me if I remember anything on the tapeing of the show. In one part we Rusty and I and I don't remember if their was another kid too were hiding behind about six horses at the fort . I remember them telling us to make sure that the horse knew we were their or we would get kicked??? They had told us to put our hands on their butts ??? I was so short I could almost walk under the horses??? But thankfully no one got hurt or kicked. Then another part we were at a house and they brought back my dad played by Ben Johnson . I remember Rusty and I going over to the dogs and the owner telling us we could pet the dogs but not too long or they get distracted, they were all beautiful dogs and well behaved.I remember Rip teasing us when we were behind the horses because he couldn't see us . He seemed to be a kind man and very soft spoken always smiled . I hope your book sells well .I am still looking for the tape Called the Failure . Oh if you do get in touch with Jay North tell him I said Hi and for him to remember Rescue 8 . I have that tape and if he wants one I will be glad to get one to him , tell him I am the girl who they thought was his sister when I was on his set for Dennis . I was doing a commercial close to his set for Dennis and he and Margret and Tommy were playing in the fake park with me. I still remember running down that hill on Rescue 8 and taping in the western town. Of course seeing the tape brought back memories . I would love to show him he did have fun sometimes taping I know the days we taped we all laughed . Anyway good luck with the book. Later Mary K. Long ( Cleary)

Goodluck on your book..I too love the Adventures of Rin Tin Tin and fondly remember Lt. Rip Masters. I have been looking for the song of the White Buffalo for quite a few years. I get a few leads but have not been successful.
I know it was out on 78 record in the late 50's, I had a copy but unfortunately it got broken. I'm assuming it was by James Brown because the song was the same as the show. I remember my parents had trouble getting it back then and had to special order it. Please keep updating your messages and let me know about the book..

Hi Bettylou,
I can help you with your search for The White Buffalo! I have a tape, made at home for my own use , of 15 songs by James Brown, including The White Buffalo. If you will email me at [email protected] with your address I would be happy to send you a copy...at no charge, of course!
The book is nearly done. I have learned a great deal about this wonderful man and can't wait to share it with the world! The one thing that is most obvious from all his friends and family that i have contacted , is that he was a kind, personable, decent man and very well-liked by those who knew him.
Thank you for contacting me. It's always nice to hear from a fellow fan.......Linda

One of the things that sticks in my mind about Rin Tin Tin was finding out many years later that Rand Brooks, who played Corporal Boone, was the same actor who played Scarlett's first husband Charles Hamilton in Gone With The Wind. I spent a lot of fun afternoons at Fort Apache with the "101st Cavalry" thanks to my TV...and as I recall one of my friends even had a real Fort Apache set with Indians and troopers etc...we played with that set every time Rin Tin Tin was on TV...had to keep it real,right?....heh

Brown was also in "Going My way and DAllas" two of the most successful films/tv shows ever.

A year after the Rin Tin Tin series ended, James Brown was in a movie called the Police Dog Story with a German Shepherd. Is it the same dog?
