This film was SO damn good! I can't believe no one has started a message board on this film. I think that Jean Simmons was adorable in this movie and played her part perfectly. Anyone else have comments on Young Bess??

I totally agree. I love this movie. I had a hard time to get in the original version since I´m from Germany but it was worth the trouble!!! Jean Simmons was wonderful and Stewart Granger - well, I don´t have to say anything about him ;o)
I also liked the part of Deborah Kerr.
Great movie!

Interesting idea! LOL But I must say, I can't see Jean Simmons with red hair and no eye brows. =) I don't believe that the makers of 'Young Bess' were centering the content and constumes around the true story. Overall, it is quite historically inaccurate. But it is a fiest to watch nonetheless!

This was "YOUNG BESS". As I understand it she had some affliction that cost her her hair and eyebrows, but much later in life. Early in life she she may have had dark auburn hair. I have a source that will supply historical accuracy and I will post what I find toward the end of the month.

I've read in several sources it was smallpox. And I believe she came down with it in her late teens or early 20s, or at least before she became Queen.

I totally agree. I saw this for the first time in the 70's when I was a child and loved it ever since. I wish it was available in DVD format.

How about a Blu-ray release while we are wishing! This was photographed by Charles Rosher who won the very first Academy Award given for his cinematography of F.W. Murnau's 1927 masterpiece SUNRISE. He later won a second Oscar for THE YEARLING. YOUNG BESS was photographed just a few years before Rosher retired and is certainly one of the most beautiful uses of Technicolor in the history of film. YOUNG BESS is one the finest love stories ever put on film with a script that is outstanding and a score by Miklos Rozsa that ranks as one of his best. All of the cast are outstanding as is George Sidney's direction. Yes it would be great to have this title on DVD -- but even more exciting as a Blu-ray!
Actually there one hope for this title to find its way on DVD -- that being through Warner Bros. Archive program where they make DVD-R's on demand for around $20.00. This is the only hope that there is of finding a DVD release for this title as the studios just arn't releasing their lesser known titles as regular DVD's any longer.

This is a beautiful movie.I wish MGM would have done a sequel with Jean Simmons playing an older Queen Elizabeth.
